MADE Makers Space

We have been very lucky during our time in Poble Nou to meet numerous self organised co-operative organisations and today Alice and Myself visited a community managed Makerspace on the other side of town. MADE is a flexible space created for artists, designers, inventors, entrepreneurs, creative engineers, makers, and hackers fabbers to develop their own projects. It is organized to facilitate the development of an open distributed learning community, co-production and entrepreneurial activities.
MADE is located in the old factory Lehmann, a former industrial building in the heart of Barcelona and, for years, building houses different spaces for designers, artists and makers. The rooms feature many vinatge features from when the original property was used to house factory workers whom worked on the previous site such as the original tile flooring and stucco ceiling details.
One of the founders of MADE gave us a tour of the facilities and gave us details on how the scheme generated funding to keep afloat, covering machinery maintenence and general day to day procedures. We were shown many contraptions and gizmos that had been produced such as a 3D TV (without the glasses) and a contraption built from Microwave parts to send 10,000 volts through two metal rods that 'burns the air between' resulting in quite a spectacle. Little did we know we had already come into contact with some of their projects at the Makers Faire the day before, where they had an automatic Tetris game on display that had been fabricated in the makers space.
It was interesting to note the government back organisations like this with a 'like for like' grant i.e if you have 4000 euros for machinery/parts they will match your input, which was encouraging to hear and useful for the development of our Masters schemes.
