My Favourite Painting

Most days, I stroll around the corner to a small bar for a cafe sin leche, or an americano and most days, I look over the gates to a warehouse opposite to catch a glimpse of the 2 storey madonna.

Usually, only the top of her crown is visible, and a small portion of her hands. It's been a point of frustration since we arrived and I set out to make it my mission, to get inside the warehouse, and photograph her in all her glory.

Today however, whilst smoking on the steps of our studio, two visitors were looking around the courtyard, as they drew closer, I said 'Hola' and asked them if they were artists in Hangar, the collective opposite us. To my disbelief and joy, they were not, but from the mysterious warehouse with the two storey madonna. Too determined, I asked them if I could photograph her, to which they said of course and I dashed inside for my camera.

The warehouse itself is comprised of small cornered off studios of metal workers, carpenters, silver smiths and inventors. A hub of male Spanish creativity! Behind the clinking and the banging, the clutter of boxes and tools and scrap materials, illuminated on the far wall and perfectly fitted within her interior, finally was the two storey Madonna.
