Mont Serrat

This weekend a friend and I decided to leave the city behind and travel northwest through the countryside to the peaks of Mont Serrat. The train dropped us at a single platform with a stunning backdrop of blue-skies, towering mountains and a tiny cable car station that was to form our next leg of the journey up to the Mont Serrat Monastery. The views from the cable car were amazing, but were only a taster for what followed.

The Benedictine Abbey itself stood strong and proud, nestled amongst the impressive rock formations and forming the heart of the small village. Inside, the Basilica is stunning, dramatic in scale and bathed in natural light with ornate lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

From here, we took the funicular almost vertically up to Sant Jeroni and then tackled a long and treacherous hike across the peaks, stopping to visit small churches and shrines along the way. Reluctantly, we scrambled down the side of the mountain to make the last funicular and begin the long journey back to Barcelona! A beautiful daytrip with many sites and hikes, I thoroughly recommend a visit here!
