Today we went exploring El Ravel and the Gothic quarter. It was a spontaneous trip, we were going to go to Monserrat! But the sun was shining, and fueled from a beer looking over Plaça d'Espanya, and a couple of ice creams later, we wandered. The older narrower streets made a change from the rigid cerda grid plan and we enjoyed exploring the historic buildings. The streets, squares and corners feel more human in scale. It was different side to the post industrial landscape of our home in Poblenou.
The character and textures we came across were amazing. The layered history creates a facinating palimpsets of cultural, social and political history across the facades of the old town. In fact, a observation of late for us is that Barcelona is full of texture, not only on the streets but on the people as well. Fashion is full of texture, much more so than at home, which obviously justifies our afternoon's later need to go shopping.
